Taurus

What is Taurus like?

Taurus is calm, steady and deeply fond of the real world. Soft blankets, fresh bread, a garden, a song played on a decent speaker: the senses are how this sign takes in life. Give a Taurus something well made and they will look after it for thirty years.

They are also among the most reliable people around. If a Taurus says they will be there at eight with a van, they will be there at eight with a van. Friends call them when the car breaks down, partly because they will come, and partly because they will not make a drama of it.

The humour is dry and slow. It may take you a moment to realise you have been teased. Taurus does not need to be the loudest in a room, because it has usually found the best seat in it.

What are the weak spots of Taurus?

Stubbornness is the famous one, and it is earned. Once a Taurus has decided, you can argue for an hour and they will simply wait for you to finish. Sometimes this is strength. Sometimes it is a person refusing to admit the sat nav was right.

Change is the other. Taurus can stay too long in a job, a flat or a habit, because it is familiar and the sofa is already the right shape. They do not fear the new so much as resent the bother.

There is also a slow temper. It takes a great deal to make a Taurus angry, which means nobody around them has had any practice. When it finally happens, the whole street knows about it.

Who does Taurus get on with?

Taurus usually gets on best with the other earth signs, Virgo and Capricorn, who share the taste for things done properly. Cancer and Pisces are good matches too, since water and earth make a garden, and both like a quiet evening at home. Scorpio, the opposite sign, can be a powerful attraction: both are stubborn, both are loyal, and neither one will blink first.

Faster signs such as Gemini or Sagittarius may find Taurus slow, and Taurus may find them tiring. These pairs can work well when each one stops trying to fix the other. A sun sign is a small part of any match, so see the compatibility pages for a fuller picture.

What is Taurus like at work?

Taurus does well where patience pays. Cooking, farming, building, design, music, teaching, banking and anything with a craft in it tend to suit this sign. They may not be the first to finish, but what they finish will not need doing again.

Taurus works best with clear hours, a decent lunch and nobody moving their desk. A Taurus manager is steady and fair and hates surprises. As a colleague, they are the one who quietly knows where everything is kept.

How does Taurus handle money?

Taurus likes to feel secure, and it likes nice things, and those two wishes are often in polite conflict. Many people born under this sign are careful with money until they see the exact right coat. Then they buy the coat. They tend to buy fewer things, of better quality, and keep them for a very long time.

What does the Taurus symbol mean?

The symbol is the bull, strong and peaceful until someone bothers it. In Greek myth Zeus took the form of a white bull to carry Europa across the sea. The glyph is a circle with two horns on top. The constellation Taurus is easy to find on a winter night in the northern sky, with the bright orange star Aldebaran as the bull’s eye, and the little cluster of the Pleiades on its shoulder.

Venus is the ruling planet of Taurus. This is the planet of pleasure and of what we value, and it explains the sign’s taste for beauty and comfort. If Venus is doing something odd, a Taurus usually feels it in their habits first, so the Taurus horoscope is worth a look. For the whole picture, your birth chart shows every planet at the moment you were born, and the Sun is just one of ten.
